robotics, days 46 to 50

sunk cost fallacy is one hell of a drug -- someone's discord status

wow everyone has been begging me to blog :dead:

So as it turns out I am the only one left working on the old robot, with Mentor S. Almost everyone else is entirely concentrated on the new robot.

So let’s split this roughly into old robot and new robot stuff.

New robot: Initially I turned out to be quite optimistic about getting it done. Well, to be honest, I think if it were up to me and KL to get it done, it would already be done. like right now.

But of course, they had to do it the “proper way”. by that I mean the team 41 way.

Design started on monday. Design is still not finished. Stuff has been machining and in assembly since yesterday but like, nowhere close to a full robot.

It is clear that even supposing that the new robot will 100% not work, that they will still continue working on it. in fact I give >50% odds that they would take this robot to competition even assuming that it performs worse.

KC spent like ~3k on the new robot already. and is telling me that we don’t have enough money or stock to allocate for anything on the old robot……

Well enough ranting, I’m going to throw some predictions in.

new robot “done” 3/22. actually done 3/25. or later.

A good portion of the team actually believes that the new robot will not be done in time. And yet they are still working on it.

old robot (henceforth referred to as my robot as I’m quite literally the only one working on it; KC says I’m running my own team and certainly it seems like it)

As I am quite literally the only one working on it (besides mentors) everything has been going quite slowly. Although somehow I think I’m faster than half of the team working on it.

For this one I’m all of design, mechanical, electrical, and programming. And the only thing I really know how to use is a hand drill.

Maybe it’s better that I don’t know how to do things the right way, because I can say confidently that the wrong way is the faster way. In fact I’m probably gonna sidestep Mentor S and do some more things the wrong way (that he wants done the right way).

I’ve done repairs to the point where I can confidently say that the shooter is working, and spindexer is like a few hours away from working. Intake looks to be a few hours away from working too, but I’m not so confident on that. Right now we can shoot around 3bps if spindexer doesn’t clog, and all the fixes are planned.

I’ve visibly demonstrated it to a good portion of the team. Nothing has changed. It’s almost as if they can’t see it. Maybe they can’t.

Claude is surprisingly helpful for mechanical stuff.

Anyway I’m not going to be there sunday before + thurs, fri, sat of competition so that’s that. Maybe I’ll skip a few more days if I feel like it. Well before then, my robot will most certainly be working.
